About fifteen years ago, I wanted to learn ways to make my own coffee. I was in my mid-twenties and my parents came to visit me. My Dad, born and raised in Harlem, NY, always had a cup of black coffee every morning. I barely remember a time when he didn’t have it. Well, I was determined to make it for him. I poured what I assumed to be the right amount of coffee grounds into the holder and I filled the water station with way too much water. What emerged was the lightest cup of coffee anyone had ever seen.

Take two included less water. What emerged was basically mud. Then Dad showed me how to make the right type of coffee and what emerged was a beautiful brew of hot coffee. Fast forward to 2022 and I’ve been making my own coffee ever since, with a few twists. Now, I love a good treat of coffee from a local coffee house, but waking up to my own brew gives me sweet chills. Last year, I began making my own spiced coffee and I can’t wait for you to try it. Yes, I even created a Spiced Coffee Candle and Black Coffee Candle out of it. But, let’s get back to making our own Spiced Coffee.

The recipe that I use is pretty spicy, so add less chili pepper if you don’t want to much heat. If you want a chilled version, add ice. Here we go:

Spiced Coffee Drink

 Favorite Coffee Maker

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup of ground coffee (more if you want it stronger)
  • 1/4 tsp ground chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp cocoa
  • 1/4 tsp allspice or nutmeg
  • 1/4 cinnamon

Directions

  • Fill the water container with 8-10 cups of water to brew.
  • In a coffee filter, mix the coffee and spices together.
  • Brew coffee and then add sugar and cream (optional).
  • On a hot day, add ice for a nice iced drink.

This is one of my favorite drinks throughout the year. Enjoy!
